American Woman The Guess Who 1970

"The Canadian quartet was already on a hot streak when this song was released in 1970; and American Woman was their fourth major hit in just over a year (the first three were These Eyes, Laughing and No Time).

More metallic than the rest, American Woman was built on Randy Bachmans heavy guitar-slinging. Yet a divide was growing within the group as Bachman, a clean-living Mormon, was running against his bandmates hard-partying ways. Hes exit the ranks while this song was on the charts, first forming a band that didnt hit (Brave Belt), and then one that did (Bachman-Turner Overdrive).

The rest of the Guess Who would carry their own hit streak well into the '70s. But what did they have against "American Woman?" Bachman later explained that the woman was the Statue of Liberty and the song was meant as a Vietnam War protest. But at the time a few people got offended, including Pat Nixon who asked that the song be dropped when the Guess Who played the White House.

Bachman and singer Burton Cummings still play under their own names. But the name Guess Who is legally owned by the rhythm section, which tours with different frontmen."

American Woman, stay away from me
American Woman, mama let me be
Don't come a hangin' around my door
I don't wanna see your face no more
I got more important things to do
Than spend my time growin' old with you
Now Woman, I said stay away
American Woman, listen what I say-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay

American Woman, get away from me
American Woman, mama let me be
Don't come a knockin' around my door
Don't wanna see your shadow no more
Coloured lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now Woman, I said get away
American Woman, listen what I say-ay-ay-ay

American Woman, said get away
American Woman, listen what I say
Don't come a hangin' around my door
Don't wanna see your face no more
I don't need your war machines
I don't need your ghetto scenes
Coloured lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now Woman, get away from me
American Woman, mama let me be

Go, gotta get away, gotta get away now go, go, go
I'm gonna leave you woman
Gonna leave you woman
Bye-bye Bye-bye Bye-bye Bye-bye
You're no good for me
I'm no good for you
Gonna look you right in the eye
Tell you what I'm gonna do
You know I'm gonna leave
You know I'm gonna go
You know I'm gonna leave
You know I'm gonna go-o, woman
I'm gonna leave you woman
Goodbye American Woman
Goodbye American chick
