http://www.frankperry.co.uk Spontaneous solo improvisation on hundreds of antique Tibetan singing bowls by lifetime musician and acknowledged master and singing bowls expert Frank Perry pioneering meditative percussion music for over 40 years since 1968. He has played with such luminaries of the improvising world as Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, & Keith Tippett. Seeking to find ways of more fully aligning his musical activity with his spiritual practises and activities led to him moving away from the established forms of improvised music in 1974. He'd begun giving solo performances in 1970 wherein his spirituality could find fuller expression through his growing collection of gongs and bells from the East. Here we find him with a selection of Tibetan singing bowls taken from his very large collection performing in his typical way of exploring the subtle sonic dimensions of these exotic-sounding sacred instruments traditionally used for meditation and healing in a spiritually inspired improvisation of almost 50 minutes. He opens with a Space-cleansing Chalice bowl folowed by an Elephant bowl (Mani Bowl) with water. This was taken from his headlining performance at the annual weekend festival of improvising music held at the Lighthouse Arts Centre in Poole on Halloween 2009. This opening section largely features his spiral of Yin bowls wherein he explores the field of microtonal tunings. He began laying out his bowls in these patterns in the mid 80s and he is responsible for many other original contribtions to this field - such as categorisation of singing bowls (e.g. Chakra bowls, Master bowls, Yin & Yang bowls, Space-cleansing bowls, Gold bowls, Silver bowls, etc). He began his collection of singing bowls in 1971 and got his first gong in 1968. He has appeared on over 100 album releases on 33 record labels. Filmed by Rose Perry
