The legendary first version of the Squid Fight that took place during the Sunset. It was a disaster with the monster looking fake & mechanical, as well as the wires being picked up by the camera. Walt Disney decided to re-shoot the sequence with a raging storm, and a new squid operated by hydrolics & compressed air (system designed by Bob Mattey, who also did the shark on JAWS). The tempest made it more exciting, hid imperfections of the monster, along with the wires supporting its tentacles.

Interestingly, Disney had his good friend Willis O'Brien on-set for a few days, just in case he had to hire the Stop-Motion Master to shoot a THIRD version of the squid fight! The music played during the sunset sequence is taken from Leagues' storm squid sequence, and was composed for the film by Paul Smith.
