This 1975 movie was based on the 1962 Ken Kesey novel. One of the best films ever made - ranked #9 on IMDb list of 250 top movies of all time, #20 on American Film Institute list of 100 best movies.

It received 5 Academy Awards (Oscars) - the Big Five for Best Movie, Best Director, Best Actor and Actress in a leading role and for the Best Screenplay.

This is in fact an instance of a mercy killing (or involuntary euthanasia). As McMurphy is released back into his mental asylum ward after a lobotomy procedure, his friend Chief Bromden decides that this is no life worth living for him. He decides to suffocate his friend with a pillow, then escapes from the hospital.
