The scherzo in C minor was written in 1853 as part of a collaborative work initiated by Robert Schumann as a gift and tribute to violinist Joseph Joachim. The complete work is a four-movement sonata for violin and piano, titled "F-A-E Sonata (F-A-E stands for "Frei Aber Einsam" ["free but lonely"] after Joachim's personal motto). The 1st movement was written by Albert Dietrich, the 2nd by Schumann, the 3rd by Brahms, with the finale again by Schumann.
