MATO PAHA ~ The mountain over 30 Tribes hold sacred is threatened by The World's Largest Biker Bar, to be built at its base.
Bear Butte sits on in the eastern edge of the Black Hills, northeast of Sturgis, South Dakota. For over 10,000 years Native People have used Bear Butte as a place of fasting, prayer and thanksgiving .
The Cheyenne call it Nowahwus. It is the place where Maheo gave Sweet Medicine the Sacred Arrows, the origins of Cheyenne religion. The Lakota call it Mato Paha. Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, and Sitting Bull all performed ceremonies here.
On April 4th 2006, over 1000 Native and Non-Native people rallied to protect Bear Butte from encroaching development, marching six miles to Sturgis, the county seat, to protest a liquor license hearing for The World's Largest Biker Bar, to be built at the base of the Butte. Development threatens Native American sacred sites throughout the Black Hills.
