Meet the author and Academic Impact Forum discussion: Prof. Paul Collier. 28 April at 1:00 p.m. @ the UN Bookshop, NY

Moderator: Kiyotaka Akasaka , the Under Secretary General for Communications and Public Information

Keynote speaker: Professor Paul Collier, Author The Plundered Planet, & The Bottom Billion (among others)

In The Plundered Planet , Collier builds upon his renowned work on developing countries and the poorest populations to confront the global mismanagement of nature. Proper stewardship of natural assets and liabilities is a matter of planetary urgency: natural resources have the potential either to transform the poorest countries or to tear them apart, while the carbon emissions and agricultural follies of the rich world could further impoverish them. The Plundered Planet charts a course between unchecked profiteering on the one hand and environmental romanticism on the other to offer realistic and sustainable solutions to dauntingly complex issues.

Panelists spoke based on the subject matter of the book, from the perspective of their respective disciplines.

Members of the panel:

Dr. Mary Papazian , Provost of Lehman College
Dr. M. Chantale Damas , Deputy Executive Director of Educational Opportunity and Diversity Programmes at the Graduate Centre in the City University of New York
Dr. Padmini Murthy , Assistant Professor at the New York Medical College of Public Health.
