Pip is a dexterous co-writer and collaborator, drawing brilliant work from both established and new artists. He is most at home in a contemporary R&B or indiepop context, but holds a candle for ‘classic’ song forms such as country, soul and pop. Adept as a beat maker and multiinstrumentalist, he has the added gift of contributing top-line melodies and lyrics as the song comes to life. Being an artist himself, Pip gets the subtle process of a song’s emergence. Though out the 2000’s Pip worked under the moniker ‘Countbounce’, producing, writing and engineering Australian hip hop records with artists such as Urthboy, Mantra, Sietta, Pez and 360. His band TZU (now on extended hiatus) claimed prime territory in the Australian hip hop landscape for a decade, dominating festivals with their left-field party anthems, infectious rants and prog leanings. In the meantime he was honing his skills along the many branches of his musical interests and collecting the vintage audio gear which would become intrinsic to his sound.
In 2004 Pip signed with Mushroom Music Publishing, stepping up as a co-writer and unleashing the earnest pop sentiments that had hitherto been restrained in his indie hip hop career. Pip has been short-listed four times for the prestigious Australian Music Prize (2013, 2010, 2009 and 2007 for work with TZU and Urthboy). He cowrote two singles on Dan Sultan’s ARIA awardwinning ‘Blackbird’. He has won an APRA award (Best Blues and Roots with Ash Grunwald, ‘Breakout’), an AIR award (Urthboy, ‘Spitshine’), ABMF Song of the Year, and has been nominated for two ARIAs, two AIRs, and two APRAs.
Pip’s now in demand for production and engineering sessions, cowrites and collaborations, songwriting camps, chord changes, toplines, drum layers, and keyboard sounds.
Artists that Pip has worked with over the years include Bertie Blackman, Meg Mac, M-Phazes, Grey Ghost, Mia Dyson, Ash Grunwald, Daniel Merriweather, Sparkadia, Gossling, Oh Mercy, Bobby Flynn, Texture Like Sun, Iluka, Joelistics, and many others.
