This video is the result of an experiment where I mounted my camera onto a monopod and then held it over the side of our ocean raft during two whale watch trips off the coast of Maui in February, 2012. It was basically guesswork as I didn't have a way to see through the lens while filming.
During the first trip, a member of the crew is leaning over the side of the raft, calling out to the whales through her snorkel. A mother, calf and escort did approach the boat and swim right under it while she was "singing". The second trip also involved a mother, calf and escort swimming directly under our boat but no human "singing" was involved.
Throughout the video whales are heard singing in the background.
