A case of Congenital Lobar Emphisema - C.L.E.
A 2 months old boy with progressive dyspnoea not responding to medical treatment. Diagnosis was made with posterior anterior and lateral Chest x rays showing a C.L.E. of the upper lobe of the Rt Lung. Emergency surgery was necessary due to the respiratory distress.
A Upper lobectomy of the Rt Lung was done.
The post op was uneventful.
Since two years from the operation the boy is symptoms free.
CONGENITAL LOBAR EMPHYSEMA ESSENTIALS
-Rare disease caused by overdistention of a lobe due to partial bronchus obstruction
-In most cases only one lobe is affected
-Most cases present within the first 6 months of age Differential diagnosis with:
- Foreign Body
- Atelectasis : Lung collapse
- Spontaneous pneumothorax
-Chest x rays can be sufficient for the diagnosis.
-At operation during the thoracotomy there is no collapse of the affected lobe.
