Step by step instruction how to remove and replace a Jeep Wrangler TJ steering gear. If your steering gear is leaking fluid or has been damaged by a rock or stump it will need to be replaced. First disconnect the pressure and return lines using a 18mm line wrench. Don't forget to place a drip pan to catch the power steering fluid as it drains out of gear. Next remove the bolt that secures the lower steering shaft to the steering gear. Open the cap on the power steering reservoir to prevent air lock. Remove the castle nut that secures the pitman arm to the ball joint of the drag link. Remove the three bolts that secure the steering gear to the frame. To install the new steering gear reverse instructions. This is a simple DIY project most people can do at home.
