PORT ALBERNI - The Alberni Inlet is a popular destination for fishing, boating and scuba diving, but Sunday night it became the site of a tragedy.

A man was scuba diving in the waters off Harbour Quay when he ran into trouble, he became entangled in fishing net. He was able to briefly surface and signal his wife who was watching from shore to call for help.

RCMP says the first responders were on scene in less than ten minutes. The man was unresponsive on scene when he was cut from the net and transported to Hospital.

The 42-year-old man was pronounced dead at hospital.

The man was trapped in a gillnet which is allowed in that area in the inlet. RCMP says the man was diving just north of the Harbour Quay Marina.

The Harbour Quay is not an area were recreational diving is allowed, and commercial divers need to be properly licensed for that area.

The investigation is on-going whether he was a commercial diver or a recreational diver. The Investigation has been handed over to the BC Coroners Service.
