At the September 22, 2015 Celebracion de Excelencia in Washington, DC marking the 10th anniversary of the Examples of Excelencia, UT's Intellectual Entrepreneurship (IE) initiative, housed in the Division of Diversity & Community Engagement (DDCE), was honored for remaining "at the forefront of advancing educational achievement for Latino students in higher education." As a prior recipient of the Examples of Excelencia, IE's accomplishments since being awarded were showcased in this video at the Celebracion.
Since being awarded an Examples Excelencia IE has expanded, its Pre Graduate School Mentorship program now having severed nearly 2,500 students with over 70% being the first in their family to attend college, members of underrepresented minority groups or coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. 35% of IE students are Hispanic. In addition, 50% of all IE students enroll in graduate school following completion of their baccalaureate degree. Since receiving this award, IE and its students have been featured in several dozen local and national news stories, research publications and op-ed pieces. Moreover, following recognition from Excelencia, IE was endorsed by numerous university presidents and leaders in higher education and received several other honors—including the National Diversity Council's DiversityFIRST Award. Of special note is the fact that IE was able to leverage the Examples of Excelencia recognition to obtain over $200,000 in extramural funding and donations, as well as procure in excess of $100,000 annually in institutional support from DDCE and the deans of 14 UT colleges/schools.
