How did America turn from empathy for the plight of migrants to become so consumed with the narrative of fear and hostility being hammered into the mediascape by the Trump administration? What happened to the words on the Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” long a proud symbol of our embrace of migrants from far-flung lands?
We’ve started work on a documentary series called DEFIANCE, about Americans who are taking action against the dehumanizing policies that are being linked to immigrants, and especially the extraordinary caravans of refugees that are making their way north in a grueling exodus from Honduras. The reasons they are fleeing their country are very much like what drove other migration waves in the past – desperation. For the next 3 weeks we will post short films from the caravan, starting with this one, titled EMPATHY. We invite you to watch and please share widely.
Let’s reflect on the waves of migrants, the ancestors of so many Americans, that came escaping famines, religious persecution, economic distress and genocide, who saw in this country an opportunity to rebuild their lives and contribute to the social fabric.
