Visa pour l'image festival: ICRC to award prize
for photojournalism on threats to health services amid armed violence

Geneva (ICRC) -- At the 24th Visa pour l'image international photojournalism festival, which will be held in the French city of Perpignan from 1 to 16 September, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will award the second Humanitarian Visa d'or photojournalism prize. The award, in the amount of 8,000 euros, honours the best work of photojournalism focusing on the issue of violence committed against the wounded or sick or against health-care workers and facilities.

The first-ever Humanitarian Visa d'or was bestowed on Catalina Martin-Chico in September 2011 in recognition of her outstanding work on the obstacles that medical staff had to overcome to perform their duties during violent confrontations in Yemen early last year.

"For the second Humanitarian Visa d'or," said Paul-Henri Arni of the ICRC, "what we are looking for, apart from photographs of direct attacks against health-care facilities and staff, is pictures showing that the wounded and the sick are the ultimate victims whenever they are prevented from safely obtaining health care."

The prize is sponsored by the Sanofi Espoir Foundation. The deadline for submissions is 31 May 2012.
