As Henry Tudor embarks on his obsessive quest for an heir, he unleashes a reign of terror on his realm that will persecute a Spanish princess into penury and disgrace and lead a spirited young noblewoman to the block, both women guilty of the crime of being unable to bear the king a living son. So when Henry meets the seemingly quiet and unassuming Jane Seymour, a gently-reared country girl with little formal education but a warm maternal heart, he thinks he has found the perfect wife. Docile, quiet, bound to "serve and obey" she brings a sense of serenity to his court and eagerly seeks to reconcile him to his estranged daughters. But Henry's desire for a son is paramount and when Jane finally becomes pregnant, the whispers abound. Will she provide the king with a prince? Or will she go the way of her predecessors? Miracle of miracles, the child is a boy. But even Henry cannot stave off the inevitable and when the mother's life hangs in the balance from a difficult childbirth, the proud tyrannical king begins to discover that God's will is not always synonymous with his and that, eventually, in the end, we all fall down.
