Wrong, wrong wrong. Its all wrong; what the heck happened to the
American dream????
I remember when we would actually like to go to the airport to take a trip. The experience was fun and inviting. Does anyone remember the dressing up? Ohhhh
and the service we received!!!
That was long ago when we were important. Yes "we" were considered
valuable cogs in the huge machine called America. That was when "we"
could scorn a rich Queen Leona (Helmsley for those too young to know) for her "only the
little people pay taxes" comment. Little did we then know that she was only telling the truth.
That was only a few short decades ago. When jobs were plentiful and life was good! At least it felt good. We were concentrating on getting ahead professionally, saving for a house and dreaming of that Sitcom "Ozzie and Harriet family". We could have it all!
Washington (and America) were alive with opportunity and filled with excitement then.
We had an eclectic mix of people who actually liked us!! After MLK (Martin Luther King), we were trying to be one big happy family. Yes we were walking the walk. We all
went to epic films like Out of Africa, A Passage to India and The Last Emperor and watched them on one ginormous screen. The Uptown theater, better known as a movie "palace", was where we were amalgamated into one and we loved it! Afterwards we went to K Street clubs and later to Georgetown for breakfast. No one worried about car jackings, swine flu or TSA searches. Our biggest worries were where to park the car and if we could by-pass the queue in front of the private club Elan (2020 K Street NW, DC). It was a time when anyone and everyone could have a piece of the American Dream and we believed it was possible.
Then we all stopped playing nice. It was kind of like when the Summer of Love's flower children morphed into drugged out hippies. We got greedy. Bad was good. It was acceptable, respected and even encouraged!
It was the birth of affluenza

Footnote 1- Fox News. article:
"The Dept. of Health and Hospitals ordered the staff at the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission to throw 1,600 pounds of donated venison in garbage bins — and then ordered then to douse the meat with Clorox — so other animals would not eat the meat," the Fox report notes.
