Many folks have done a one-day media fast, or a one-time, month-long media purge. But my husband and I -- serious media junkies, have been taking a media fast the first week of every month since February 2002.
Our first MFW was the week the US invaded Iraq -- it was a perfect testing ground to take a break, and we heard the big news from our friends and colleagues anyway. We realized then just how much media we consume that we didn't need to, at least not every day. And how much time and brain-space was returned to us.
And then, of course, it got difficult. Like any other kind of fast, taking a break from media HURT. But we still do it, every month.
Now, it's a way of life for us, and something we challenge others to do. At Ignite Baltimore, using illustrations (yes, media) and words, I'll share my experiences and philosophy. I hope that the audience will be motivated to take their own media-free week, day, or hours, and see what they miss, and what they gain.
