"This was actually a send-up of East Coast folk music (best personified by James Taylor). About my first live-in girlfriend who had split while I was on the road. We lived in a little farmhouse 25 miles outside of Nashville and had to pretend to be married to appease the landlord." (Dan Fogelberg)

How was "Old Tennessee" inspired?
"That was a funny song. This is interesting because I never told this stuff. I wrote "Old Tennessee" as really a "cop," as a joke. James Taylor was real popular at this point, and I was hearing this kind of ... in James' writing there was a lot of similarity. There was this east coast folky type of thing. And I said, "Well, hell, anybody can write something like that," (laughs). So I wrote that and it's really just a send up of early James Taylor work. And I just wrote about whatever was happening at the time, you know, about this girl I was with at the farmhouse who left, and all this sort of thing. So it wasn't anything I did seriously, I just thought it was a send up of a particular style. (Laughing) Now I'll probably get a letter from James." (Dan Fogelberg) - Interview by Lydia Hutchinson

"Old Tennessee" was written when I lived on a farm outside of Nashville, as a parody of east coast folk music. It was written about a young lady I briefly cohabited with, and her subsequent departure. (Dan Fogelberg 6/11/97).

This is one of my favorite songs from "Captured Angel" album (released 1975), Dan also put this song into "Portrait" album, it's a beautiful ballads. Hope this song heal us through the tough time, inspire and comfort us in time of trial, and bring peace and hope to our life!

Old Tennessee (Lyrics)

End of October
The sleepy brown woods seem to
Nod down their heads to the Winter
Yellows and grays paint the sad skies today
And I wonder when you're coming home

Woke up one morning
The wind through the window
Reminded me winter was just 'round the bend
Somehow I just did not see it was coming
It took me by surprise again

(Chorus)
And I hear you're in San Francisco
Living with your sister who's a mother to be
And her husband's way down in Georgia
And I'm still in old Tennessee...
Wishing you'd come home to me

Life here is easy I'm sure you recall
How it's so warm and breezy
In the summer and the fall
But winter's upon me
And I've got no heat here
And I miss your fire so sweet
Dear I miss your fire so sweet

(Chorus)

End of October
The sleepy brown woods seem to
Nod down their heads to the winter
Yellows and gray paint the sad skies today
And I wonder when you're coming home
I wonder when you're coming home
I wonder when you're coming home
