The ways adults respond to, and support and encourage communication, language, and literacy learning matters a great deal for child learning and development. Paying attention to what young children like to do, responding to their actions and comments, asking open-ended questions, and encouraging them to talk are different ways parents or practitioners can encourage early communication skills. This video illustrates the use of responsive teaching for encouraging children’s early language literacy learning.
