Metal Blade is an old, free FM95 doujin game by Donguri and Retsuzan. Having four playable characters (there are five, but you can't attack with the boss of the game, DE-A) and a basic fighting engine with a fast pace, the game would've been pretty cool if it was expanded on. Unlike other more modernized 2D fighting games with super gauges and counter moves, the game relies on high-speed movements, specialty dashing and evasive rolling manuevers, attack canceling to throw opponents off their game (consumes a little health every time it's activated) and the "skill" system. Each character has three basic attack buttons for light-medium-fierce blows and a button to utilize a special skill.
There are no "fireball motions" or sophisticated things of that nature. All skills are done with the press of a single button, and characters can alternate on the fly between skill one, two, three, or four. In rare cases, characters can even incorporate attack cancels into quick skill shifts to combine multiple skills in a single combo. For instance, Nana can execute a ground combo, use her level 2 skill to rapid dash attack, cancel that, and press the skill button again to shoot a fireball. Some characters have multiple skills within the same skill level too. Nana can dash attack at level two but can also do a rising kick into the air and a diving kick to the ground. All characters also have two ultimate level four skills (one in ground and one in air), but they can only be done at low health and they can't use any skills for a few seconds after a level four skill, so missing imparts a harsh penalty.
The visuals were okay for a doujin game of the time and the music is good... really, it sounds like something that came right out of Lufia/Estpolis or one of the 16-bit Final Fantasy titles. This is a video using Nana; she has incredibly short range, but she has amazing speed, good combos, and devious cross-up capabilities. She is the only character without a blade, as her arms, legs, and inner strength makes her as deadly as any other fighter. You can get this game at:
