Nataly’s Corner welcomes back the music of smooth jazz saxophonist & 2014 Soul Train Award Nominee Vandell Andrew: When you have a passion to play music and come from the same city [New Orleans] as ICONIC jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong …you better turn it up! And that’s what smooth jazz saxophonist Vandell Andrew did…he came large and in charge with his 2014 LP release “Turn It Up”.

Vandell’s bio says he was interested in the trumpet. I have no doubt that with his determination; he would have been just as successful with the trumpet…as he is with his saxophone. But I’m glad he chose the latter. Vandell’s ambitions for a music career were heightened after Hurricane Katrina hit his city, and he then started composing music. This led to him playing at various venues and sharing the stage with various artists and musicians, such as legendary saxophonist(s) Kirk Whalum and Tom Braxton. Having relocated to Texas, Vandell released his debut album, “Years Later”, in 2011. “Turn It Up” is his second album and it reached #1 on the smooth jazz billboard chart in 2014. The album also brought Vandell a 2014 Soul Train Award nomination for “Best Contemporary Jazz Performance”. Bottom line…the question is not IF there will be more from Vandell Andrew…the question is WHEN! He’s rising to the top folks!
