Brumbies, Wild horses or feral horses, there are thousands upon thousands of them in the Australian high country. The Australian Alps have evolved in the absence of hard-hooved animals, and now, with so many horses, the alpine environment is rapidly degrading. A consequence of such large numbers of horses is that food can become scarce, especially in winter. On an expedition from dead horse gap to Mt Kosciuszko in Kosciusko National Park, my colleague Sam Banks and I encountered the grisly consequence of overpopulation by horses. This video tells the story of what we saw.
