EMBT Architects - (2005) - Mercat Santa Caterina (Barcelona, Spain)

Wonderful Mercat Santa Caterina [http://www.mercatsantacaterina.net/] strikes a magical balance between local producers and consumers, contemporary architecture and tourism. There is happiness around, a blaze of colors and lights, a celebration of cheering and smiling people, voices and gestures that express agreement and participation. The Avenida Cambó [41°23'11N-02°10'40E], the area where the project is located, is an isolated fragment from the main lines of the urban tissue then returns to life after years of isolation and marginalization. The project, begun as restoration of the old market, has expanded to include the redevelopment of the entire district on an urban scale, the proposal sought by designers EMBT architects (Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue [http://www.mirallestagliabue.com/]) and well received by the client, l'Ayuntamento de Barcelona. The project started in 1997 and completed in May 2005 shows to the city with a language "kaleidoscopic and hybrid", able to communicate with the story, that of the district, but also that of the archaeological sites discovered during construction, and in the same time to transmit an eccentric, colorful, informal atmosphere. Contemporary, but in the widest sense of cultured, more than shaded, significantly refined. Here they seek to paint a unique urban setting, more than following a formal reference or a trends solution, drawn from a variety of choices, even seemingly contradictory, but part of that collage, the same journey to the interpretation of 'soul of the city. Complex , eclectic, mediterranean soul, just like the one that Enric Miralles (who died in July 2000) and Benedetta Tagliabue expressed in their project. The protagonist of this work is the cover (5,500 m2) that wraps the building encroaching beyond the perimeter of the entire construction (3,749 m2): this is a colorful and wavy coat that reproduces drawings of fruit and vegetables. An item of great vivacity and attraction for the city. La copertura, realizzata attraverso l'assemblaggio di 300.000 esagoni di ceramica, è sostenuta da una "selva" di pilastri in acciaio che movimenta la distribuzione dell'interno. The cover, created by the assembly of 300,000 ceramic hexagons, is supported by a "forest" of steel columns that handles the interior distribution.
