Derrick Lewis plans to be in ‘best shape of his life’ after surgery | Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show

UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis joins Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show via Skype to detail his thoughts on having surgery on his left knee. Lewis clarifies that he suffered a complete tear of his meniscus and MCL and a partially torn ACL, which he says is “hanging on by a thread" (1:07). Lewis adds that his coach Bob Perez was trying to get him not to compete with this injury two weeks prior to his fight against Junior dos Santos, but he didn’t want to back out that close to the bout (4:49). As far as recovery time along with rehab, Lewis states that his doctors told him he would be out for 4 to 6 months (6:53). Lewis expresses his frustrations with his loss to dos Santos at UFC Fight Night and feels like he could have won that fight (7:37). Lewis expects to be in the “best shape of his life” after he recovers from his surgery and plans to lose some weight as well. (10:46). Lewis jokes that he is all big time now and that boxing legend Mike Tyson reached out to him (12:09).
