This past July (2010) Roots & Shoots Youth Leadership Council members from around North America met at the Youth Leadership Training Retreat in New Orleans, LA. Participants worked together to create video interviews with residents of New Orleans and the surrounding communities in order to document the effects of the Gulf Oil Spill which occurred in April. These videos are now being used by the Louisiana Bucket Brigade as a part of their Oil Spill Crisis Map, a historical documentation of the spill.

The Audubon Zoo, located in historic Uptown New Orleans, has been making many efforts to try and help rescue wildlife from the oil spill in conjunction with the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. The Audubon Zoo is known for its diversity of local and global species. They also teach the relationship between people and the environment, for example they now have an interactive display showing how their scientists clean animals covered with oil.

In this video, Roots & Shoots Youth Leadership Council Member's interview Amanda Mazzoni, who leads the Discovery Walk at the Audubon Zoo. Amanda speaks about the zoo's responsibility for educating the public after the oil spill and ways that concerned youth can help, such as aising money or "adopting" a sea turtle to support the zoo's clean up efforts. She also discusses how the oil spill illuminated the critical need for alternative energy sources.
