Sergey A. Dzugan MD, PHD, a world renowned expert in Physiology and Hormonal Restorative Therapy. Dr. Dzugan is a retired heart surgeon. "What causes disease?" From our point of view, disease can be caused by one of four factors: Genetic or Congenital, Infections, Trauma, and finally, acquired physiological errors. This is any error that our body has acquired through aging, and any mistake that our DNA or RNA make in transferring data to our cells will make an error, and this error will lead to another error, and we will get snowballing numbers of errors that will lead to disease. We believe that this category of disease can be addressed by restorative medicine. As you can see from this slide, Errors of Physiology are the root cause of disease, and affect all systems, and from this we have formulated the main principle: If you have one cause, you need to use one solution, or the One Disease, one treatment approach, it looks very simple but we will see how it works.
We believe the method of Restorative Medicine is the answer to our concerns because restorative medicine treats the errors of physiology by restoring the body's hormones and nutrients to optimal levels. This restorative medicine approach is effective for the diseases and conditions caused by physiologic errors because they are all basically the same disease. Very strange statement, how can heart disease be the same as migraines or arthritis or depression or Alzheimer's disease? We propose that they are all fundamentally the same because they are caused by the same problem: a physiologic and hormone imbalance including deficiencies of important vitamins and minerals, and we describe the principle of physiology optimization in the book, "Your Blood Doesn't Lie!"

In 1996 we employed a new term, hormonorestorative therapy, into our practice for the regimen that was used for our patients, and hormonorestorative therapy is defined as the multi-hormonal therapy with the use of a chemically identical formula to human hormones. We didn't use hormone replacement therapy, we didn't use hormone substitution therapy with drugs, we restored THE hormones, that is the difference. The goal of hormonorestorative therapy is to restore vital forces that control the optimal physiology to treat the patient, not the illnesses that have befallen them. The key word is patient. We never try to catch the dragon's tail; we try to squeeze his head. This slide shows the production of hormones like DHEA and testosterone during aging, these are the age groups and as you can see, by age 50, DHEA levels have dropped over 70% since they were 20-30. What happens if the body can't produce 70% of its insulin? You go to the doctor and he will give you insulin. What happens if your body cannot produce 70% of its thyroid? You go to the doctor and he will give you thyroid. What happens if your body cannot produce 70% of its testosterone? Again you go to the doctor and he will give you what? (Audience member: Testosterone?) No, Viagra! So, you can see, from an endocrinological standpoint we have to be careful. We must remember that bioidentical hormones are not synthetic drugs. I will try to show this in a simple way. This is a model of the literal hormone progesterone, the so-called female hormone, but the male body produces progesterone, the female body produces testosterone. We are human beings, we have the same bodies, but our bodies produce different amounts. And this is a drug that looks like progesterone, but it doesn't behave like progesterone, it doesn't have the same effect. I will try to explain a simple way to distinguish between drugs and natural hormones. When you are tired what do you need? Water. This smart guy said "I will put in vodka in one of these glasses and water in the other. Drink it, don't smell it, I guarantee in the morning the effects will be different. The situation is the same with any kind of synthetic progesterone or so-called progestins and progesterone.
