Good Ba Ba cruises to a repeat Citi Stewards' Cup

24 January 2009

In the most effortless fashion imaginable, Good Ba Ba strolled to a second successive victory in the Citi Stewards' Cup and in this imperious form is virtually unbeatable over a mile at Sha Tin.

Patiently handled as usual towards the tail of the field, the 1-2 favourite Good Ba Ba cantered past his rivals from the top of the straight and in an instant the only race concerned the battle for second place.

Good Ba Ba won eased down by a length and three-quarters from Fellowship with Viva Pataca finishing third in this first leg of the Citi Triple Crown for the third year running.

The time of 1 min 33.29 seconds was half a second outside the course record Good Ba Ba set against several of the world's best milers a month ago.

The victory was the seven-year-old son of Lear Fan's tenth over the Sha Tin mile and his sixth at the highest level and the fact that Christophe Soumillon felt the reigning Horse of the Year had felt "as good, if not better" than his stunning victory in last month's Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile spoke volumes for the performance.

"It was just very easy. I just sat on him quietly and he changed his legs at the turn and cruised to the lead. It was automatic. He's just very good, one of the best I have ever ridden," said Soumillon who was winning the race for the second time after Bullish Luck in 2005.

Trainer Andreas Schutz added Good Ba Ba would remain in Hong Kong in a bid to repeat last year's Gr.1 four-timer by annexing Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (HK Gr.1-1400m) in March and the Champions Mile against international opposition at the end of April.

Ranked the world's Older Turf Miler in the World Thoroughbred Rankings recently, Good Ba Ba clearly has the measure of every other miler in Hong Kong although stronger opposition may yet emerge from world champion sprinter, Sacred Kingdom, who is set to make a belated seasonal debut next weekend.
