Hitler wasn 't the first to commit genocide on the Jews. Anti-semitism is deeply rooted in Western societies. Take the example of Spain and the Spanish Inquisition. As soon as the so-called Catholic Kings had reconquered Granada, the last Muslim stronghold in Spain (end 15th century), they created a State-controlled Inquisition. Especially the 'conversos', the Jews converted to christianity, were their target. Inquisitors looked scrutinously at remains of Judaic identification within the conversos.
Anti-semitism grew so bad that in the end all Jews fled Spain, which meant a heavy loss of human and cultural capital for Spain.
