I love The Smiths version. But Jeff could do things with his voice that Morrissey didn't do. The last minute and a half or so of this is absolutely sublime. I'll always miss Jeff's interpretation at that point when I listen to the original now. Jeff had a way of fulfilling other people's musical statements in such a respectful and humble way. The man knew how to get down to the marrow of music.

This kept me sane through Afghanistan. Spiritual words by Morrissey, sung beautifully by Jeff. I don't think I could have my soul stirred any more profoundly. Weep with joy!

Hey man. i just re-read what I wrote. Man i was pissed. Literally not figuratively. I stand by most of what I said. though agreed this is not the best place for political debate. Sorry for any offence. Whisky is a hell of a drug :).

My fiancé just called off our wedding, and this song describes how I feel perfectly. " oh mother I can feel the soil falling over my head, as I climb into an, empty bed...oh well, enough said." This was basically me crying over the phone to my mom last night.

As unbelievably beautiful as his voice was, you take for granted what a fantastic musician he was. Always suiting the song, never overplaying to say " look at me, I'm a guitar player and I'm going to throw in every lick I know so you'll realize just how badass I am". Just painting a beautiful picture with fingers and strings. It's what you don't play that is most important. Jeff Buckley was an amazing talent and twenty years later, there hasn't been anyone to come near. But it's all subjective and I'm old opinionated. I get it.

Same key and time signature. Different chord progression but both have the famous "minor fall" of Hallelujah.
