The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and King County recently released 100 tiny kokanee fry into Lake Sammamish, near Seattle. Adult kokanee were captured in the fall of 2010 and their eggs were raised at the WDFW Issaquah Hatchery. Because of their declining numbers, Lake Sammamish kokanee are in danger of extinction and protected under the Endangered Species Act. Scientists believe efforts like this fry release will help boost kokanee numbers in the wild.
