Veterinarian Bill Kortum, of Sonoma County, California, played a huge role in protecting the California coast. Beginning in 1962, he helped defeat a proposed nuclear power plant on the Bodega Headlands. His role in fighting for public access to the beaches at Sea Ranch drew him into the Proposition 20 campaign. He remained active in Sonoma County for another 40 years, helping preserve open space and working toward creation of the light rail system serving the county. A section of the California coastal trail is named for him.
