These are the Perry FFA Program's pregnant sows "Salt" and "Peppa". They will give birth 20 or more piglets sometime in the next few days. The cameras help the program advisor keep an eye on them so as to be able to help when the births take place.
The piglets will be raised by Perry FFA members as part of their Agri-science class. Each piglet will be raised by a student who will take them to the county fairs this fall.

We hope you enjoy our "Piggy Cam"
The metal crates used to position the sows are called farrowing crates and are a standard device used to prevent the sows from harming the piglets.
Farrowing crates reduce pre-weaning mortality – and provide a warm dry environment for the pigs which improves their health status and well being. Also, farrowing crates provide a cooler area for the sow and warmer areas for the young pigs. The flooring is designed to keep the pigs dry which reduces the spread of enteric diseases.”
