Iraqis have held a huge rally to mark the December-withdrawal of US forces from Iraq in the main square of Shiite enclave of Sadr City in Baghdad.
Men and boys waved Iraqi flags and raised banners praising those who had fought against the US presence in Iraq.
The influential cleric Muqtada al-Sadr addressed his supporters by video link from Iran. He urged the Iraqi government to release all Sadri detainees kept in Iraqi prisons.
Members of his militia, the Mahdi army marched through the square in yellow uniforms, trampling over American and British flags.
Meanwhile, the 33-year-old senior member of Islamic Jihad, Khader Adnan, has been on hunger strike for 55 days. He has lost 60 pounds in weight and he might be in his last hours. Adnan is being held in what is known as administrative detention.
The facility allows Israel to hold suspected militants without charge based on secret information that is not shared with lawyers.
On Thursday, dozens of Palestinians protested outside the prison in which Adnan is being held.
