'Fats Burn In A Carbohydrate Flame'
In order to use our almost limitless fat stores there must be some carbohydrate present. In other words when carbohydrate stores are restricted, which can occur during many forms of sport and exercise, you will not be able to rely on fat alone. Carbohydrates are the body's preferred fuel source. They light the fire!
Much of the advice to sporting individuals, centre around the need to have considerable glycogen stores by way of an elevated carbohydrate diet. This has been the take-home message for over two decades and has taken up a significant chunk of sports nutrition research.
