"B-Grade" was a script I wrote as a tribute to some really old science fiction I was watching at the time. Not the "B-Movie" stuff (despite the name), but more like the original "Outer Limits" and novels like "Dune".

I took it to Filmonik's Mini-Kabaret as a draft script thinking that I might get it made if people have the time. My friend Una Love jumped on it and saw potential in the script. Steve and Cinthya came aboard and Cinthya (and her flatmates) let us film in the corner of her flat. Ta guys.

For me it allowed me to direct actors properly for the first time. I have done some directing before, but that was mostly watching fine actors improvise around given guidelines. "B-Grade" with the complicated dialogue and long takes allowed me to watch, take note of the performances and offer advice for the next take. Needless to say the actors themselves brought their own takes and angles on the material -- which saved me a job.

The whole thing was shot, cut and screened in 24-hours -- which is not uncommon for Kabaret. For more info on Filmonik and it's Kabaret events please go to:

"B-Grade" and its inspirations played with me for months afterwards. I decided to bulk up the script and pulled in some other related concepts I was struggling to find form for.

"B-Grade" the film short has now become "Space Station Zero Delta" the radio show. It's a comedy drama about the first radio signals received from an alien space station located just outside our solar system. The clones are still there and Bennett is still a scheming manipulator, but I've also brought daily lives of the clones, office bureaucracy and the failed attempts at Earth invasions. (OK, so I got back to "B-Movies" again.)

I am in discussion with BBC Radio 4 to bring this to life, although I have been assured that it is a long shot. For me it's something that gives me pleasure in writing for. It's something I'm going to come back to... and who knows where it will end up?
