In this video, I demonstrate how to get your Mac (must be running OS X Lion or higher) out of a Gray Apple Loading Screen, with no loading progress/spinning wheel. I demonstrate this using my MacBook Pro, which had stopped booting normally when trying to install the GM of OS X Mountain Lion. The one and only simple way to do this is to restore the OS software, which happens without erasing any of your hard drive content.
