Speaking before the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, Rebecca Harms MEPĀ (Germany), co-leader of the Greens/European Free Alliance group in the Parliament, said efforts to save the euro would fail if not enough was done to regulate financial markets. "Mr Barroso [...] I don't think you are the man who can show the way forward," she said.

The markets, I don't think the markets are crying out for regulation, but rather I think the markets make any use of our policy to speculate against the Euro and individual countries and I think that these are hart felt appeals on our part lead to nothing or in vein if the COM and the Council don't follow up, don't draw the lessons when it comes to regulating the financial markets, proposal are headed in the right direction but there are inadequate.

We are not going to sacrifice any EU countries if there is solidarity which we keep saying, how this is to come about we can't say, because it is all a matter of form, I don't think so ability to act has any credibility, Mr Barroso you analysis of the turmoil of the recent months, I don't think it is sending the signal that you are the man who can show the way forward together with your COM and the inter-governmental approach and more pulling together.
