"miraculous universe I" is our latest video offering, and is a clear step back to where we belong - in the realm of live ambient guitar. in the past, in order to perform guitar in a live, solo, ambient setting, there was basically only one method available - which was, and still is, looping. the set up I used successfully for many, many years, consisted of an energy bow, a guitar, a looper, and a reverb unit to provide some atmosphere or ambient to your live ebow improv. this set up and technique, works perfectly well - and you can hear many examples of ambient loop guitar throughout my recorded catalogue, from the 1990s right up through more recent albums such as "the haunting" - an album made up entirely of looped, ambient guitar - all but one track, recorded completely live.
however - times change, and the looping method, although still perfectly viable, has now been joined by other more modern methods. devices such as the Eventide H9, or the Line 6 HD series or Helix series, began to introduce bespoke patches that were entirely suitable for doing live ambient guitar performance - without the need to loop! this was a bit of a revelation for me, and I found out first in the world of Eventide H9, not just a few ambient sounds, but many, many patches indeed, dedicated to very, very atmospheric patches constructed out of complex combinations of various modulations, delays, and reverb - amazing sounds, and I still use many of these Eventide patches all the time for live ambient guitar work. now - don't get me wrong, I love looping, and I will always continue to loop and produce ambient loop guitar work, but now, I have a whole new set of sounds, thanks to companies such as Eventide and Line 6, from which I can build up amazing guitar "patches" that I can just play through with an ordinary plectrum or pick, and without the need for my ebow/guitar/looper/reverb set up - I can literally just plug a guitar into an H9, call up one of many dozens of very, very atmospheric, ambient patches - and begin to improvise or compose ambient music. it is - brilliant to say the least.
what this does, is it allows me to create ambient music in a huge range of new ways, as each new patch from the ambient patch geniuses at Eventide or Line 6, gives me a veritable myriad of absolutely beautiful guitar sounds to work with. I chose one of these patches on the helix, and began working with it - and this remarkable improv appeared, as a direct response to the sound of the patch - and it creates a most satisfying kind of ambient sound that I really enjoyed creating and I think, sounds truly beautiful - so - with no further ado, I present to you now "miraculous universe I".
"miraculous universe I" was recorded live to digital on February 4th, 2018, and was improv 7, take 1 on the day.
