Anyone who has ever enjoyed the devilish signature tune to The Alfred Hitchcock Presents television show unknowingly became a fan of Charles Gounod's charming "Funeral March of a Marionette." In a departure from the opulent manner of his grand operas - Faust and Roméo et Juliette, for example - Gounod devised a caricature of funereal ceremony by cleverly dressing a playful little theme in mock-serious orchestration for low clarinets and bassoons.
