On this day in history (April 2, 2001), one of the strongest solar flares ever recorded took place around Sunspot 9393. The event measured X20 and sparked a strong radiation storm around Earth. The massive Sunspot was rotating towards the western limb, so much of the expanding CME cloud was directed away from Earth.
