This is a quick run through of the "What's Shenmue?" demo disc that was released in Japan in 1999, several months prior to the game's release.
There's a lot on the web dealing with the longer and superior "What's Shenmue?" VHS footage, but I couldn't find anything comprehensive on the actual demo, so I thought this might be of some interest to some fans. There's some nuanced differences between this and the full game, but unfortunately the demo is short, only about ten or fifteen minutes long even if you take your time.
I had to cut some commentary and scenes, because YouTube couldn't afford me the extra minute and thirty seconds I had over the limit. Minor bits of nuance that I removed or edited out include Nozomi tending to the flowers, Miki's different face and a random NPC not in the full game (the latter two still appear at the end of the "dream," at least).
A properly-executed title and credits screen, hopefully decent transitions and some narration make this the biggest "production" I've ever done. From recording the video footage to uploading it to YouTube, to re-editing and re-uploading it, it took about five and a half hours.
Unfortunately I see now a few spots that don't flow well, some genuine fat I could've trimmed. Ah well, for a first effort regarding actual editing, I'm content.
