While China plans its "Polar Silk Road" under the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese commercial boats sail along shipping routes in the Arctic to transport cargo. There are currently two routes: the Northeast Passage in the Arctic Ocean, which is the shortest route connecting northeast Asia and western Europe, and the Northwest Passage, which runs along Canada’s northern coast.
