Brussels - Germany has one month to adopt a data retention law if it wants to avoid a lawsuit and a fine. (The European Union's executive, March 23, 2012).

Deception of the journalistic corps. This kills reporters' right obligation to protect their sources overnight.

Romania and the Czech Republic have also declared the directive unconstitutional, while Hungary and Ireland have implemented it but have referred it to higher courts for final judgment. . Sweden meanwhile implemented it after a vote in the Swedish Parliament on Wednesday, but not without controversy. (Jennifer Baker, March 23, 2012)

"This has been one of the most filthy, deceptive political campaigns to introduce a massive Big Brother law I have ever seen. It turns your mobile phone into a governmental tracking device that will essentially follow your movements in real time."(Rick Falkvinge, founder of the Pirate Party, March 23, 2012).

The Data Retention Directive (2006/24/EC) was adopted in 2006 and should have been transposed into national law by 15 September 2007, with the option of postponing the retention of communications data relating to Internet access, Internet telephoning and Internet e-mail until 15 March 2009.
