Until now, Hollywood has shaped the way people think of the American West. Images of cowboys in saloons, American Indians in headdresses, and outlaws robbing trains at gunpoint come to mind. Now visitors at an exhibition organized by the National Portrait Gallery in Washington can learn about the real personalities who helped shape the West -- and its image beyond.
