Papali'i Doctor Viopapa Annandale Atherton, a retired medical doctor, was a young woman at the time of the first Independence. She is now a strong advocate for women and children's rights and is at the forefront of the campaign to eliminate discrimination against women. She is known in Samoa for her work with Non Government Organizations (NGO's) in particular the PANPacific and South East Asia Women's Association.
