When Gonzalo La Cava was hired as the chief of human resources in the School District of Palm Beach County, Fla., the department was slow to respond to the needs of schools—if it did so at all. La Cava overhauled how the department interacted with teachers and principals, ensuring that human resources not only thought strategically about growing a pipeline of teachers from diverse backgrounds, but also set up critical supports for teachers.
