An apple tablet computer, early versions were presented in 1989 (code named scribe). Production units (code named penlite) shipped in small quantity to Japan in the fall of 1992 as test for a world wide roll out, about a year before newton. Cancelled in production due to fear of competing with Newton. Amazingly, after being stored for 20 years it boots from the the HDD with all sorts of prototype and testing software. This is a court requested explanation of the penlite product.
The penlite was built on the apple powerbook duo chassis (25Mhz 68k with 4MB RAM) so it could dock in the powerbook duo dock.
There were numerous earlier versions under the prototype names of scribe and penmac.
As well as handheld versions; Papaya = kalieda and pocket crystal = general magic.
While this video presents the pen only version there was a version that demonstrated multiple finger touch.
