A native of New Zealand, tenor Simon O'Neill makes his San Francisco Opera debut this season in a role he has performed with Minnesota Opera. The Merola Opera Program alumnus’s engagements this season include Cavaradossi (Tosca) with Hamburg State Opera; Florestan (Fidelio) with Houston Grand Opera; Walther von Stolzing (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Siegmund (Die Walküre) in Hamburg and Berlin; and Max (Der Freischütz) at London’s Barbican Theatre. Career highlights include Siegmund at Milan’s La Scala and Berlin State Opera; Cavaradossi with Deutsche Oper Berlin; Siegfried (Götterdämmerung) in La Coruna; and the title role of Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival; Siegmund, the title role of Lohengrin, Florestan (Fidelio) with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Siegmund at the Metropolitan Opera; Lohengrin at the Bayreuth Festival and Houston Grand Opera; Mitch (Previn’s A Streetcar Named Desire) and Max at Theater an der Wien. O’Neill’s discography includes his award-winning solo album Father and Son, Wagner Scenes and Arias (EMI), the title role of Otello with the London Symphony Orchestra, Die Zauberflöte for the Salzburg Festival Mozart 25 DVD with Riccardo Muti, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony with the Sydney Symphony, and Chauson’s Le Roi Arthus with the BBC Symphony.
