In January 2011, Andrei Cherny was elected chair of the Arizona Democratic Party. Phoenix Lawyer Don Bivens was stepping down, and two candidates were running for chair-- Cherny and former Tucson City Councilman Rodney Glassman. Both men had recently lost elections in November 2010-- Cherny for Treasury Secretary, Glassman for US Senate. The controversy that surrounded the January Statewide Committee Meeting was that Cherny was not technically eligible for state chair because he was not an elected precinct committeeman. Bending the rules to elect Cherny resulted in many heated debates.
